Just received my 5th order today November 17, 2006 Dwight (USA) 28 out of 34 found this review helpful
I am thrilled with this storage series. Plastic or Aluminum wrap just doesn't compare. I've used this to store baking ingredients, to store stacked backs of ziplocked beef in the freezer, thin slices of fish, prepared casseroles and of course, leftovers. The largest size holds just a few slices less than an entire pineapple. I think I'd like bigger ones but the current sizes are incredibly versatile in steaming, baking, refrigerator and kitchen cabinets. A larger size might be too unwieldy. I wish pyrex had come out with these decades ago. They are so wonderful. I wish Amazon had offered 18 pieces earlier at such a wonderful price. I've bought the 14 piece set at $29.99. The costs comes out to $5-4 dollars per piece so this is a very big indulgence on my part. I also just ordered an additional 12 lids from Worldkitchen for $17 to replace the split immediately when used lids for my Anchor Hocking milk glass custard cups. I think this fifth order may be my last order. I've never received a broken shipment even though Amazon only packed air bags on the top not the bottom and all sides. p.s. I am on my SIXTH ORDER but I am starting to lose count. Oh, wow. These things are so good. I use them for salmon apportioned with my expensive knife, I steam curries, Thanksgiving leftovers. The little ones get used all the time. None of the sizes are gathering dust. This is a great product and with lids averages out to about $3 or less per set so pick the set that is priced no higher than $3 per bowl with lid. SOMEDAY, I hope to make English trifle in these. I got the blue lids for my anchor hocking 1-cups and those are all being used as well. This is so awesome. Is this frugal? not at $3 a pop but the material of the bowls and the tightness of the lids give me the best peace of mind and a sense of order and control Would I have purchased this used at a cheaper price off of craigslist? no Did I shop around for the best total price including the manufacturer's website? yes and so should you
Great versatility--LOVE THESE BOWLS! June 1, 2007 D. P. Taylor (East Coast, USA) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
After reading reviews, I decided to purchase this set. I got so tired of storing in plastic and having to switch to a different container to then reheat (TWO bowls to clean up). These are great for both purposes, the sizes fit my needs, I can see what's inside. Since my storage space is limited I nest 2 sets, and usually have the extra 2-cup in constant use. The lids are very tight; they'll loosen just a little with use. Easy cleanup [NO STAINING]. Buy these--you won't be sorry!
LOVE this set! August 13, 2007 Winning Edge 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I now have 3 sets like this and LOVE them for leftovers. Don't want to reheat in plastic after all I've read about the dangers, so am trying to only use glass now. Wish they could invent something other than a plastic lid that's safe but otherwise LOVE all the sizes for leftovers.
Pyrex containers simplified my life May 27, 2008 DTK (Atlanta) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I had fairly recently invested in a set of Rubbermaid Premier containers when the news got out about BPA (bisphenol-A) leaching into foods from plastic. I didn't want to invest in more plastic -- even grades of plastic that are currently considered safe. I decided to go with glass. And I'm glad I did. This set is one of three that I purchased. I also bought the Pyrex Storage 6-Piece Refrigerator Shape Storage, Clear with Blue Lids and the Pyrex Storage 6-Piece Round Set, Clear with Blue Lids. With these three sets, I feel I have ample storage for whatever I cook for my family of four. I had feared that switching to glass -- although the right decision for me from a health-consciousness perspective -- would be the source of some headaches. I imagined having to be overly cautious with the containers, treating them super gently, worrying that they would slip out of the refrigerator and break, wondering how I would stack them in the cabinet without having them all fall down. To my delight, this hasn't been the case at all. The manufacturer's claim that the glass is light-weight is fair. Obviously, these aren't as light as plastic containers, but they are very manageable. The sizes in this 18-piece set are pretty versatile. The smallest bowls could fit a single serving of fruit or a side dish. The medium bowls are general purpose size. The largest bowls in this set are pretty spacious, and are about as big as you'd want in a glass bowl -- anything larger, and you would start to have problems fitting it in the fridge. These pieces are not as attractive as those in Pyrex's more fashionable lines, but I would have no qualms about serving from these at any casual meal. They look much nicer than anything plastic. The Pyrex lids are, to me, an improvement over the lids that come with Rubbermaid plastic containers. First, each lid has a lip that runs all the way around the outer edge. This allows the bowls to be stacked safely on top of each other, whether in the cabinet or in the refrigerator. The storage bowl on top rests inside the lip of the bowl on bottom and won't slide off. Also, the design of these lids makes them easier to clean. All the Rubbermaid container lids I've owned have had a very narrow opening on the outside edge where the container fits into the lid. These crevices can trap bits of food (usually sauces gone astray in my experience) and can be very difficult to clean. The Pyrex lids have a wide lip that can easily be wiped out. Other reasons I am glad I replaced my plastic containers with these: 1. No more concern about harmful chemicals getting into my food. 2. I can microwave leftovers right in the storage container. 3. I can wash these in the top or bottom rack of my diswasher without any worries. 4. I can put fish, tomato sauce, whatever into these and not worry about them retaining stains or odors. Buying these Pyrex sets was a bit of an investment, but now that we're being told you should replace plastic every few years since it breaks down with use, heat, etc., I figure I will make up the cost in the long run.
Just what we needed! February 5, 2008 Kimberly E. Beall (Franklinton, NC USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I originally ordered these because I was concerned about rumors that microwaving food in plastic containers may not be safe. (Maybe nothing to worry about, but why take chances?) Anyway we've come to like them so much we have stopped using the plastic containers altogether, microwave hazards or not! They are all in exactly the sizes we use most often, and I can't believe how little space they take up in the cupboard - much less than the plastic ones did - since they are designed to nest and stack so well. They go right from fridge to microwave to table and back again, so save us a lot of redundant container-switching and washing. Oh, one other nice thing about them that may or may not be relevant to other folks: My husband used to have a terrible habit of balancing large plastic leftover containers in the fridge precariously on top of a tower of tiny ones, so that whenever I opened the door I'd be hit by an avalanche of leftovers. He doesn't do that with these glass containers - I guess he does have a sense of caution when it comes to glass, at least! That alone may have made the whole purchase worth it. :) (I intend to buy more of these containers, by the way!)
