Product Description The Wusthof 2-Stage Knife Sharpener has a coarse carbide side that sets the knife's edge and a fine ceramic side to finish the edge. The non-slip rubber feet help to keep the sharpener in place for safe use, and the sharpener's small size makes it perfect to take along while camping, fishing, or hunting. The sharpener is designed for both right and left handed use.
Amazon.com Review Some knives are so dull they need a major edge reset; others are pretty sharp already but just need some fine-tuning. This handy pocket sharpener from Wuesthof does both. Clearly labeled Coarse/Carbide and Fine/Ceramic, the two slots on the sharpener let you know which to use. Set the edge on a dull knife with the carbide, then hone with the ceramic; or, simply keep your good knives razor-sharp with the ceramic honing slot. Non-slip inserts on both the top and bottom let you flip the sharpener for the slot choice and keep it steady on a table or countertop during use. The small size of the sharpener makes it easy to tuck into a tackle box or backpack, great for sharpening folding or filleting knives on camping, fishing, and hiking trips. The bright red sharpener also features a key-chain and a textured grip emblazoned with Wuesthof's Trident emblem. --Ann Bieri

recommended by my cooking instructor November 21, 2007 L. Knights (Silicon Valley) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
I was taking a cooking class that was all about knives and part of it covered sharpening and honing them, which I found interesting but someone intimidating, especially with all the talk about getting just the right angle on the blade. Finally, our instructor let us in on a little secret...you could get one of these and it might not be quite as good as a professional knife sharpener that is actually a master of their craft (as opposed to a butcherer or over-grinder of your knife blades), but for just a couple of bucks this pocket sharpener does a darn good job and is pretty dummy-proof. I know you can buy these locally somewhere...I'm sure I could have hunted one down to save a few bucks over what I paid on Amazon, but to have it delivered right to my door rather than spending hours looking for one was really worth it. I had two really dull but good quality knives in my kitchen, and in less than a minute I had two really sharp and honed knives.
just what I was looking for December 3, 2005 katjax 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
This little sharpener is perfect! I was asking for this in stores before it even hit the market. It is so easy to use and it works great. It maintains the 20 degree angle and there is no guessing whether you are keeping your knife at the correct angle as you sharpen it. All you do is pull it through, and it covers the entire length of the blade without missing any areas. It's amazing. Thank you Wusthof! I am using this on my Global knife too, and it works great. The angle on the Global was 15 degrees but for me that was too sharp and it was preventing the knife from traveling on the cutting board. So now it has a 20 degree angle and it works so much better. For me this was a tremendous improvment. I highly recommend this sharpener.
Works great -- BUT... August 23, 2007 Lee (Mississippi) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I recently ordered this sharpener from Amazon. I saw the $18 retail price and the Wusthof name and assumed this was a better sharpener than the Smith's Abrasives sharpener it resembles. It may be -- I haven't tried the Smith's sharpener. But I doubt it -- this Wusthoff sharpener is made by Smith Abrasives, Inc. At least that's what's stamped on the back of it. You can buy a Smith's Abrasives sharpener from Amazon or buy one for less than $3.00 at Wal-mart. All this aside, this is a great little sharpener. I sharpened all of my kitchen knives with it in only a few minutes. It's very easy to use -- just drag the knife blade through the coarse side and then the fine side a few times. It's easy to hold and the non-slip feet really help. Overall, I'm very happy with it, but I think I could have saved a few dollars and several days if I had just bought a Smith's sharpener at Wal-mart.
Excellent value. February 21, 2008 J. Hoelscher (Texas) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This sharpener is just an amazing value. I've now used it on a dozen kitchen knives (some of which had been abused and nicked), a few scissors, and assorted hunting and fishing knives. Basically, as soon as I got it I sharpened everything I had. It did a great job w/ all of them. When I bought it, I was fully prepared to toss it and buy a more expensive sharpener, but figured that for the price, and based on earlier reviews, it might do the job. It did. It is nearly foolproof. Very easy to use. The only major drawbacks that I see are that you can't do serrated blades and it's small size makes it somewhat unstable. To me, the convenience of use and storage is worth the loss of stability and serrated knives don't need as keen an edge as regular blades. When I say it is somewhat unstable, I mean that you need to pay attention and make sure it is sitting on an even surface. The non-stick pads work and the design makes it hard to cut yourself unless you are just being completely careless. You do need to make sure the keychain isn't under the sharpener, but that's the only place a reasonable person could go wrong. For seven bucks, I'm going to buy another of these before I get one of the more expensive sharpeners. Highly recommend.
Great bargain January 27, 2008 David R. Ewoldsen (Tuscaloosa, AL United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
For the price, this is a great little sharpener. One of the difficulties of using a wet stone to sharpen a knife is getting a good consistent angle on the blade, but with sharpeners like this one - that isn't a problem. Also, this sharpener is light and compact enough to take backpacking (or regular car camping). On longer trips, I find my pocket knife can get rather dull because I use it for a lot of things it probably shouldn't - but this sharpener is perfect. But I also use it extensively in my kitchen and it does a great job with both knives that are very dull or if you want to add a finer edge to a knife that is already sharp. For the price, I think this little sharpener is hard to beat.
