Appropriate for preteens July 9, 2002 265 out of 272 found this review helpful
My daughter is 9 and I thought it to be an approprate time to start the "talks". This age group is still so innocent, it's hard for them to fully understand all that is coming up for them in just a few short years. The thing I like about this book is that kids can absorb information at their own pace and as they need it. What they're not ready for they won't read and when they are, they can look at it with some privacy (I've even heard her giggle about it with her friends). The book coveres a lot of self care like teeth brushing, showering, and the basics. The last part of this book is about menstruation and body hair. There is no sex talk like some other puberty books.
Be prepared! April 25, 2005 Susan (California) 18 out of 19 found this review helpful
This book is wonderful. I bought it for my 9 year old. The pages on tampon insertion are very graphic. This is good for later - just not the first day. I took an exacto knife and carefully cut out the pages referring to tampon insertion. They are put away for later. When the time comes, we'll pull those pages out. My daughter was a little uncomfortabe talking about the book until I told her that I wish I had it when I was a little girl. She giggled when I told her that no one told me how to shave my legs so I did it all wrong!
The PERFECT book to give your pre-teen daughter!! October 7, 2004 D. Miller (Columbus,Ohio United States) 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
This book is a wonderful book to give to your pre-teen daughter. This book explains how their young bodies are changing into puberty. It touches on a variety of subjects such as hygiene, eating disorders, sports safety, your feelings, starting your period, ect. There are illustrations of a girl showing the proper way to insert a tampon. It gives a fantastic simple explanation as to why we have periods and what happens to our bodies. All the information in this book is in good taste and geared at instilling self confidence and good self esteem in our girls. (There is NO offensive sexual info) I gave my daughters this book when they were 10 years old and am so glad I did. I feel it opened a line of communication with my daughters that will build through the years. As parents, I feel it is important to be open and honest with our daughters about life and their bodies. This is the PERFECT book to start with!
A good book for young ladies ... August 26, 2000 Christophe J. Campbell (Overland Park, Kansas) 23 out of 24 found this review helpful
I'll admit to being a bit apprehensive of my daughter's impending move into puberty, most likely due to my status as her father! I didn't want her to be surprised at the changes her body was beginning to experience, but found she seemed to be slightly embarrassed when we discussed the subject. Since I wasn't quite convinced that my wife was all that comfortable discussing this with her, I purchased this book on recommendation from a good friend. I must say my daughter has found it to be an interesting read. I think it has helped relax any preceived tension (hers or mine?) that she may have had, as she keeps it by her bed to read and review several times during the week. The book doesn't just focus on puberty but also includes short, helpful suggestions and comments on hair care, nutrition, clothing, images of women found in media, etc.
Fantastic, most exciting book! March 6, 2001 Mary Jamba (Cleveland, OH USA) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I find it a very interesting book. It's a great way to learn about becoming a young woman. It has pretty much everything you need to know about your body, and how it changes. It includes how to take care of yourself and growing up advice.I recommend this to all girls and young woman ages 8 and up.
