Lover Enshrined-A Joyfully Recommended Title June 4, 2008 M. Nix 22 out of 48 found this review helpful
Phury's devotion to the Black Dagger Brotherhood moved him to commit himself as Primale to the Chosen. As Primale he is responsible for fathering sons and daughters on the Chosen so that his race will remain strong and survive. Chosen Cormia, Phury's first mate wants what her vows strictly forbid her from having. Cormia wants Phury all to herself. She wants him body and soul. Although Phury as never allowed himself to come first, his desire for Cormia will force him to decide between his responsibility to his race and his own heart's desire. After finishing Lover Enshrined I had one immediate thought, mainstream fiction. Yes, there is still the romantic element in Lover Enshrined, however, it is secondary to the story. Trust me, it's totally ok. The story doesn't even need romance to keep me enthralled. J.R. Ward addresses some tough issues in this volume of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, which makes Lover Enshrined a gritty, visceral and emotional novel. I absolutely loved every page and am a slavering idiot for more! Annmarie Reviewed for Joyfully Reviewed

Phury has given endlessly of himself to others, both before joining the Black Dagger Brotherhood and as part of the elite group of vampire warriors. He strives to be what everyone needs of him, but such sacrifice ultimately comes at a price. Phury's price? Debilitating addictions that finally begin to take a deadly toll on his sanity and his health. These addictions only grow worse as he faces the ultimate sacrifice, having given himself in service to the Scribe Virgin as the Primale, whose duty is to breed with all of the Chosen and repopulate the dwindling ranks of the Brotherhood. But this is one sacrifice Phury finds difficult to follow through with, especially as he finds himself unable to think of bedding any of the Chosen but his First Mate, Cormia, a female of worth so far above him that he finds her untouchable. That doesn't stop his longing for her, however, and proximity to the lovely Cormia only exacerbates his desire, driving him to extremes that will soon come to a head in dangerous ways. While Phury struggles with his new role as Primale and his unexpected feelings for his First Mate, the Brotherhood is thrust into the thick of battle with the Lessening Society as the evil lessers gain new ground in their war upon the vampires. Once again, J.R. Ward has run my emotions through the wringer, but in a way that keeps me coming back for more again and again. I simply cannot get enough of Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series! As with the previous editions in this ongoing saga, Lover Enshrined is not an easy read, but it is a gripping one. With the sixth story of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, the author tells the story of Phury and Cormia as they both enter new worlds. Phury must learn to deal with his new role as Primale and the strange, controlled environment of Sanctuary, where he is revered by the Chosen. Cormia finds herself in a total sensory overload as she tries to cope with the wild, colorful world outside of Sanctuary. As each of them search for their place in these worlds, their journeys grow into a true searching of the soul for both as they discover who they really are and what their most heartfelt desires and needs truly are. Alongside the main story of Phury and Cormia, we revisit many of the characters we have come to know, love, and wanted more of in previous stories. Many secrets are revealed in this book and just as many more intrigues are introduced. We learn more about the Omega, and even read part of the story from his perspective. John Matthew and his friends Blaylock and Qhuinn play a much larger role in this story, and we learn more about each of these characters, as we do their nemesis, Lash. Zsadist and Bella return as her pregnancy advances and Zsadist realizes he must intervene with Phury's growing problems. One of my favorite characters has a much bigger part in Lover Enshrined as we see more of Rehvenge and his myriad secrets. We catch a few more glimpses of Xhex's life, but only enough to promise her a more prominent role in future stories. Still, the bits we see are definitely titillating... There is more, of course, but I've told everything I can without giving spoilers. I certainly wouldn't want to ruin any surprises for other readers. Suffice it to say that I think other fans of this series will be as taken with this book as I am. I cannot recommend Lover Enshrined highly enough. With an intense, gritty storyline infused with potent sensuality, Ms. Ward delivers a compelling tale that will keep you biting your nails on the edge of your seat while wiping away the occasional tear. Lover Enshrined packs plenty of surprises, and although it is an emotional read, it ultimately leaves the reader with hope for these characters' present and their future. Wow! This is superb! June 11, 2008 Avid Reader (Tulsa, OK) 9 out of 20 found this review helpful
In my humble opinion Ms. Ward has outdone herself with this one. OK, I'll get it out of the way first off. The romance story between Phury and Cormia doesn't have much meat on it, so I understand some complaints there. As a matter of fact by the romance point I was as ready to kick Phury out as the rest of the brotherhood. His dithering around wasn't at all attractive. And Cormia didn't get many more points in my book either. She could have been more helpful in bringing Phury to the sticking point, except she dithered around too. Neither are my favorite characters. BUT THE REST OF THE STORY! Wow again! The plotline for the Omega's offspring was inspired. There was a character who ended up right where he belonged! I couldn't figure out why he (I won't spoil it by telling who) didn't just get kicked out of the Brotherhood long ago but Ms. Ward had the perfect spot for him to end up. I'm going to thoroughly enjoy hating his guts! I loved the extra info about Rhevenge. He's working so hard to be good, I hope there's a love story for him somewhere down the line. (Maybe Payne?) I love how the boys are coming along and the whole story about what happens to the three of them is fascinating. Can you tell I loved this book? So glad that an old friend made his way home and brought such an interesting new character with him. I cn't wait to see how she uses Lassiter in coming volumes. (A fallen angel?) So many things happened in this book that will keep me reading anything she writes in future. I thought the birth of Bella's baby was a little rushed but it looks like that will be covered more thoroughly in the next book. Which I cannot wait for. This series just keeps getting better and better. Well done, Ms. Ward.
Excellent.....Very, very exciting, interesting and at times Funny June 22, 2008 Jacqueline M. Raines (Tampa, Florida United States) 5 out of 19 found this review helpful
I loved this installment in the BDB series. It was true to form for JR Ward aka "the Warden." I read the complaints and they seem like a bunch of boohoohoo to me from women used to the straight guy-meets-girl-fight-makeup-HEA. The Warden's books are intense and incredibly interesting. I absolutely loved picking up on the continuing stories and loves of the other characters. Especially Zsadist, Bella, Vishous and Jane. I was as mad at the end of V's book "Lover Unbound" as some of the reviewers are at this book. But, I reread V's book before beginning this book, got over my homophobia, and I would now give V's book a five star rating. This book had to go as slow with the love affair as it did. Phury was even more damaged than Zsadist, if that is possible. Cormia was in a NEW WORLD. She turned out to be a great heroinne. I liked her strength and caring. Loved it!

Phury is at a crossroad in his life. Just when he should be fulfilling the Scribe Virgin's prophecy as the Primale, he finds himself alone. It is almost as if he doesn't know how to function day to day. His inner rage at his life often times takes him to places that are better left alone but with Phury, that is how he copes. His Chosen first mate, Cormia, is still in the BDB compound, but she and Phury have yet to bond. While situations throw them together daily, Phury's inner turmoil and focus gets in the way. It isn't until his mating instinct kicks into high gear that Phury even admits what he feels for Cormia. In acknowledging his feelings, his actions set a precedent for times to come. Cormia is supposed to be the perfect Chosen - the one woman who would be first mate to the Primale Phury of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. If that is the case, why is she so discontent? Why does she want to go outside and run free? Why does she want Phury for her own? Unable to answer these questions herself, she does what she learned to do best while being a Chosen. She waits. She waits for the opportunity to show Phury that he is a male of worth and that she loves him. Two hours ago I finished reading LOVER ENSHRINED. Since closing this book, I have been pondering this story, wondering what I could possibly say that would make readers understand what a truly outstanding novel LOVER ENSHRINED is. Scenarios run through my mind and as each one becomes clear to me, I am not sure that I possess the talent to do LOVER ENSHRINED justice. But I will try. Phury. Talk about a male of worth. Did his characterization seem realistic? I work with men of his type daily. Men who struggle to decide if they are worthy of even the most simplistic things in life. And then I see those same men come to terms with their failings, pull up their pant strings and go about living their lives as men who have learned from mistakes but who haven't given up on the life they have been given. In all of his multicolor-haired glory, that is how I picture Phury in my mind. He is steadfast, he is loyal, and above all, he is worthy of love. He just needed a push in the right direction. Then you have Cormia. What a wondrous creature she is! Beautiful, shy, the almost perfect Chosen. Her one flaw? She wants to be free. Free to run, free to explore, and free to be in love with the one man who needs her love the most. It goes without saying that the entire plot and premise of LOVER ENSHRINED is nothing like I envisioned. It is better in fact, because of all the scenarios and scenes that ran through my mind prior to reading this novel, none of them were like I thought they would be. Did I think that Phury would find happiness? I had no doubts. Did I know he would find happiness in the way he found it? No. I had no clue as to how that would turn out. Then there were the surprises that Ms. Ward effortlessly wrote into the pages of LOVER ENSHRINED. Did some of them actually surprise me? Definitely. More than once I was wide eyed and astonished at some of the facts and side stories. Because of this, J. R. Ward's unlimited talent as a writer continues to astonish and mesmerize me with each Black Dagger Brotherhood installment. Her ability to weave lore, magic, and the surreal into her novels and make them absolutely amazing just puts me in complete awe. Then there are the emotions she brings forth. Several times I found myself reaching for tissues while reading LOVER ENSHRINED and if anyone else can read this book without tearing up at least once, then I hold you in high esteem. LOVER ENSHRINED is truly one of the most brilliant novels I have ever read and I know others will feel the same. Doors on future stories were opened and some doors on past questions were closed. As for the brothers? Their lives continue and it is with bated breath and some sadness that my wait for the next installment, Lover Avenged, has begun. LOVER ENSHRINED released on June 3, 2008. I fully recommend reading the prior five installments before reading Phury's story. LOVER ENSHRINED is fully understandable without reading the other books in this series, but no one should miss the world and loves of the incredible men known as the Black Dagger Brotherhood. ***Natasha Smith for Romance Junkies***
