Product Description Most people think that beauty revolves around such things as lipstick, sweet eyes, or skinny jeans -- all those things that we can see (and obsess over) in the mirror. But the fact is that beauty isn't some superficial pursuit, and it's not some random act that you can thank (or curse) your ancestors for. There are, in fact, scientific standards to beauty. Beauty is purposeful, because it's how humans have historically communicated who we are to potential mates. Beauty, in fact, is really about your health and happiness. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Michael F. Roizen and Dr. Mehmet C. Oz bust the myths and stereotypes about the way we view ourselves -- and how we define beauty. In these pages, you'll find out why beauty isn't as much about your vanity as it is about your humanity. The doctors take a scientific, informative, and entertaining look at the three levels of beauty and explain how they all work together to form a complete and authentic YOU. Those three levels of beauty are: - Looking Beautiful: Your appearance influences your self-esteem and has major health implications. Here, the docs will tell you how you can look the way you want.
- Feeling Beautiful: So what if you have luscious lips or gorgeous locks if your joints creak and you have the energy of a rug? The docs will tell you how to improve your energy levels, beat back your life-altering aches and pains, and come to grips with some of life's toughest stresses.
- Being Beautiful: By improving your relationships with your loved ones as well as with others, you'll be well on your way to finding true happiness. That's the ultimate goal: Having all three levels of beauty working together so you can have a happy and healthy life.
You'll start off by taking the ultra-revealing and validated YOU-Q Test to help you assess where you are on your own beauty scale and where you want to be. Take the test, see how well you do; then use the book to help you improve your score. With their usual candor and honesty, Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz break down the mechanics of beauty and explain how little adjustments in your routine can help you become a happier, healthier person. You will learn about the biology of beauty, take YOU Tests to determine where you are on the beauty scale, get tons of YOU Tips to help you improve your life, as well as learn the secrets of the Ultimate Beautiful Day. From hair to toenails, Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz go through every part of your body to explain how different foods, vitamins, creams, gels, and injections can really boost your looks. They scrutinize the beauty myths that bombard us every day and offer an unbiased perspective on which ones cause more harm than good. You will be able to revamp your beauty regimen (or start a new one from scratch). They'll also take a close look at chronic pain, mood swings, low energy, and financial stresses. And they'll dive into the science of building relationships, finding happiness, and using spirituality to help you define your own levels of true beauty. Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz act as tour guides navigating the tricky but exciting terrain of today's beauty industry. YOU: Being Beautiful is your all-inclusive ticket into the world -- the real world -- of beauty.

Feeling beautiful already November 12, 2008 Emma Baier (St. Louis) 88 out of 125 found this review helpful
I'm a fan of the authors and have read all of their books. What I enjoyed most about this one is that it targets beauty from three essential angles. They show you how to look beautiful, feel beautiful, and even BE beautiful. As you might expect, they offer a ton of test and tips to help you work on all your beauty areas from your hair, to your skin, your teeth, and so on. Physician authors Michael Roizen and Mehmet Oz show us that beauty is a biological science available to any health-conscious woman. They teach true hair-to-toenails beauty that considers every facet of our well-being. The authors focus on what foods, vitamins, gels, creams, and injections can really boost your looks -- and mind-set. They provide tools, tips and quizzes on physical appearance-caring for hair, skin, nails, teeth, etc.; forming healthy diet and exercise habits; reading labels and selecting products; and choosing cosmetic enhancements (breast implants, Botox, tattoos, piercing and LASIK, for example). They also include practical ways to manage energy levels, ease aches and pains, prevent injury, cope with mood disorders, end addictions and create positive home and work environments. Identifying work and finances as major stressors and loving relationships as key to health and happiness, they offer insights and suggestions for developing a big-picture, spiritualized view of life. A 24-hour "ultimate beautiful day" shows how to implement changes into your typical schedule. Another book I very strongly recommend because I've enjoyed it immensely and have made some major improvements to my inner beauty since reading it is The Emotional Intelligence Quick Book
Looking, Feeling, and Being Beautiful January 7, 2009 marathoner67 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
If you've read a lot of the other "YOU" books, you're probably thinking what I'm thinking, "When are these guys going to run out of ideas?" Well, they haven't yet, and unlike a lot of sequels, this one's not half bad. So what's the point of this book- to just look beautiful? Well, not exactly. While looking beautiful is definitely covered in the book, the authors want to make it clear that real beauty isn't just "skin deep". As far as they're concerned, there are three "levels" of beauty. They are: -looking beautiful -feeling beautiful -being beautiful (which is more or less acting/behaving beautiful) The book is really thick and takes its time covering each of these major areas. A little bit about what is covered in each section: -being beautiful: beautifying and caring for your skin, hair, teeth, nails, and feet are discussed here, as well as weight and muscle toning tips. -feeling beautiful: learn how to beat pain, the blues, low energy and debt in this section. (I found the info on accupressure points very interesting) -being beautiful: I felt that this was kind of a "catch-all" section. The major issues addressed here were improving relationships, sex info, and a short discussion about happiness (rec. Finding Happiness in a Frustrating World for a more detailed review of happiness). The book ends with an hour-by-hour plan for the "Ultimate Be-YOU-tiful Day". I doubt I could pull this day off very often, but it was a nice way of pulling many of the book's tips together to show you how they can be easily integrated in your daily routine. All-in-all a very enjoyable, and comprehensive book for those looking to improve both their inner and outer beauty. People looking for a beauty book that discusses just outer beauty will likely be disappointed.

Beauty- Inside vs. Outside- Transform Your Perceptions with this Awesome Read! December 19, 2008 Michael Chopoorian (Brooklyn, New York) 15 out of 29 found this review helpful
This fascinating, introspective book, "You: Being Beautiful- The Owner's Manual to Inner and Outer Beauty" has the distinction of being both an interesting read, as well as a valuable medical resource, as the authors Michael F. Roizen, M.D. and Mehmet C. Oz, M.D. are also licensed physicians. Therefore, while reading their book, you attain insights on how to achieve well being and inner satisfaction, while knowing that their medical insights are documented and researched based on their respective professional experiences. The authors include interesting chapters and ideas on how simply taking care of your body, and making healthy lifestyle choices can effect the way you feel about yourself, and consequently the way others `see' you. They discuss the importance of oral hygiene, daily exercise, and my personal favorite- `how to save your hair'! The emphasis on physical beauty is balanced by chapters on emotional wellness and developing satisfying relationships with the close family members and friends in your life. Additionally, two of my favorite authors, Ariel and Shya Kane have written an inspiring book on discovering how to have a great life by simply being there and being yourself. In "Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: The 3 Simple Ideas That Will Instantaneously Transform Your Life" the Kanes question the relevance of physical beauty over internal wellness. Will losing that extra five pounds really make you feel beautiful? Will that new hairstyle add satisfaction to the way you interact with your life? Instead of spending your life in turmoil while you `work on' the next best thing' the Kanes suggest you simply look within you own being- exactly the way you are in the current moment- and celebrate what is already within you. I have worked with Ariel and Shya Kane in their Monday Night Alive and weekend workshops in New York City, and I'm grateful that their wisdom and approach to life has truly transformed my own definition of the word `beauty'. Check out their books, workshops, and Internet radio show at transformationmadeeasy.com For great insights and a new approach to going for your life, I suggest you put these books on your holiday wish list, pronto!

I have read of Dr Oz's past work and each one gets better and better. It is very informative and most of his books are about our bodies and how they function but this one includes psychological and emotional aspects. Would recommend to all that truly enjoy learing about themselves physically and emotionally.
