Synopsis:

After blasting away the competition to become the most-watched cable miniseries of 2003, "Battlestar Galactica" returns as a one-hour weekly drama. The show reunites the entire cast and creative team behind the miniseries, including stars Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Jamie Bamber, Tricia Helfer, Katee Sackhoff, James Callis, and Grace Park. The new "Galactica" series picks up where the hit mini-series left off. After engaging in a losing battle against the Cylons, humanity's last remnants fled in search of a new home, a mythical planet called Earth. With waning supplies, weapons and hope, Commander Adama and President Laura Roslin (McDonnell) realize that their problems are far greater than the immediate threat of Cylons. On their shoulders rests the very survival of humankind.

5 out of 5 stars For free stuff, Download BSG: The Story So Far, Phenomenon, and What the Frak - but not Revealed   September 5, 2007

Amazon seems to have combined all the BSG download reviews and spotlighted my previously separate ones of both Season 3 Unbox and Story So Far, so I'm going to update this review to comment on the free downloads and focus on the ones you have to pay for in the other review.

BSG: The Story So Far is an interesting splicing of the highlights of the first two seasons. While now two seasons behind, it's good as both a quick catchup on older material as well as containing the added bonus of getting to listen to Mary McDonnell narrate the highlights of the journey through New Caprica through Roslin's eyes, which is interesting in itself. Like some of the best Unbox downloads, it also has better-than-DVD video quality, which is about as good as the series will look if you haven't gotten to watch it in HD. Recommended.

BSG: Phenomenon is a neat 30 minute tribute to the show by various celebrities, including Joss Whedon of Buffy fame, S. Epatha Merkerson and Jesse Martin of Law and Order, and numerous others. It's certainly a promo, but what's fun here is that the various stars don't seem to have been hauled in by the ear to talk up the show by the network; they come across as genuine fans who were just pretty excited to get to talk about how they started watching and what they love about the show (and beg for a walk-on cameo before it's over so they can see the sets and meet the cast.) Good stuff.

BSG: What the Frak is a hilarious 8 minute run through of the first three seasons with a rapid-fire tongue-in-cheek narration. Won't ruin some of the great lines here, but one example as Tricia Helfer struts: "There are 12 humanoid Cylon models. Some actually look like models." Probably shouldn't watch if you haven't watched the first three seasons and plan on it eventually; too many spoilers, the humor is inside, and the pace is too much to really get a clue as to what's been going on - but for the fan who's watched it, it's a riot.

Finally, BSG: Revealed is a misnomer and not worth watching. It's marketed as a sneak preview of Season 4, but there's almost no new material and the commentary by stars and producers on it is mostly old news. There's also a very annoying banner at the bottom of the screen during the entire broadcast promoting the premiere. PQ via Unbox is surprisingly mediocre given it and Phenomenon are airing in HD on UHD too. Not worth it even for free.

5 out of 5 stars Ever try something new and everything works out just fine?   August 28, 2007

I fear change. I shy away from bleeding edge technology. I stay safe. There was no way I was going to install some commercial program that stays resident and runs in the background on my computer. (After all, it was probably written by cylons.) But then 'they' got me. What a dirty trick: BSG3 would be released in England next month, but not in the US for the indefinite future. If I wanted to watch BSG (which is the greatest program on television, bar none), I would have to risk installing 'Unbox.' As an avowed conspiracy theorist, you know what I thought about that. Grudgingly, I downloaded the Unbox Player and installed it. I had to turn the computer on and off a few more times than expected; but that's par for the course on most installations. Then I decided to splurge. I spent $1.99 to check out an episode. Seemed a safe risk for the money, and the software installation had gone so quickly I was left with time on my hands to monkey around with this 'Unbox' thing some more. So I logged in, spent my $1.99 and prayed. Just as I started to exhale, a little notice popped up in the bottom right-hand corner. Aha! I knew things were going too well. I peered at the little message window and it read, "Your video is now ready for viewing." Huh? This must be a trick. I opened the Videos section of the Unbox player, and there was BSG, begging to be played. So I just hit the button and prayed. The Gods of Kobol answered. I spent the next hour watching my favorite cylons play havoc with their tormented human pets. Nothing makes me happier. As other reviewers have noted, BSG3 spends more time on character psychology, etc., etc. But it is still blessed with a sufficient amount of random violence, special effects, and surprising concepts to guarantee your satisfaction. Needless to say, I downloaded the entire season, plugged in the S-video cable (everything looks better on a large screen), and stayed up late for a few nights. The only downside of this 'Unbox' thing is that you need a megadrive to accomodate the video files unless you want to spend a lot of time shuttling videos to "backup" media, an experiment I will leave for another day. Thank you for reading my adventure. I wish you the same luck that I enjoyed.

5 out of 5 stars Some useful tips for watching this series   August 31, 2007

Do yourself a favor and watch one episode. That's all it takes. :)

If you don't mind forking over $15, you can download B.G. The Mini-Series for the backstory before watching Season 1, Episode 1.

Or get the summary version by watching the first few minutes of the FREE "Battlestar Galactica: The Story So Far."

Also, as of 8/2007, Season 2, Episodes 6 & 7 ("Home") are switched. Someone at Amazon screwed up and mislabled them. So watch what is labeled "Episode 7" (in reality Episode 6) before the one that Amazon has labeled "Episode 6". It's possible they will have fixed the problem by the time you read this. Either way you'll figure it out if you watch a little of both.

5 out of 5 stars Summary meant for start of season 3   November 26, 2007

Those of you who are complaining that this summary does not bring you up to speed and prepare you for season 4, that's because it is not meant to. It originally aired and was available for download before season 3 started. It does a great job of wrapping the mini-series and the subsequent seasons into a digestible episode. It's not meant for BSG fans. We already know ALL of this. It's simply a freebe to entice more viewers. Starting off watching some shows a few seasons in doesn't make much of a difference. However, with BSG there is a lot that these characters have gone through. Without a bit of back history new viewers are going to have no clue what is going on and immediately turn away. This short at least gives them a chance to stay tuned.

That being said. True fans... it's worth watching to get your fix of anything BSG, total n00bs... it's worth watching to get up to speed, everyone else... don't waste your time.

5 out of 5 stars Great story line! I watched the free "story so far" and I was sold   January 4, 2008

First of all, the amazon unbox software is extremely resource intensive. It tends to hog up my computer to the max and it crashes. I have a fast system too with the latest hardware so it's not my system.
The advantages are - the movies are cheaper to download in bulk. Less work then buying online and waiting for the DVD or renting it at the store (if you can even find it) For 20 dollars a commercial free, cheaper than the DVD (but DVD quality) season was a good deal. I plan to buy more seasons on unbox.

Now to the real review - I have almost finished watching all of Season 1 BSG and it's awesome. I have never seen any of them before but I am a big SCI FI geek and I loved Star Trek. Computer graphics in the shows are excellent and the story line really strings you along well to wonder what's going to happen next. Two thumbs up for putting hot women in this series, and making them show up everywhere. What's sci-fi without hot robot women?
