5 out of 5 stars Best all-around digital media player!   April 18, 2008

Hands down, this is the best digital media player I have purchased. After three failed attempts at buying an updated media player (Insignia Pilot 8GB - terrible sound quality, Creative ZEN 8GB - terrible interface software with the computer) I finally found the Sansa Fuze.

This player had everything I was looking for: low price point, large memory capacity (8GB), an exandable memory port (microSDHC), FM radio capability, and small size.

The unit itself looks and feels of quality construction, the interface with the computer is simple (just drag & drop to either internal or external memory) and it has amazing battery life. I've had no problems charging the unit on my laptop or via a USB A/C adapter. The manual clearly states that some USB ports are not powerful enough to charge the unit, particularly those on the front of the computer, and in that case to try the back USB ports.

As for video quality, I can't speak to it. The Fuze has only a 1.9" screen, so if you bought it to watch videos you must have microscopes for eyes.

Overall, the Sansa Fuze is the best bang for the buck in terms of sound quality, construction, ease of use, and functionality. If you're looking for an excellent digital media player, you've found it!

5 out of 5 stars an excellent alternative to ipod nano   July 7, 2008

I've had mp3 players before ipods were introduced. So I have a history of trying many of them. My last purchase was the 30 gbyte creative vision:M. Which is still running very well but compared to what is available now, it is rather big to take to the gym.
So I decide to keep my creative player at home, docked to the home audio system and get myself a smaller flash player to take around. Funny how we go in circles. My first 16 Megabyte player was flash. Then we had to move to disk drive for higher capacities, and now we are back to flash memory catching up to the disk drive capacity of a few years ago.

I considered going to the newest Zen by Creative. Although it was smaller than my disk drive Vision M, it wasnt as small as I wanted it to be.
I considered the new Sony walkmans as well, they have great reviews out there, great sound, great earphones out of the box, and are smaller yet, but unfortunately they did not support Audible files which I must have.

That left me considering for a long time buying the third generation nano ipod.ipods are good players, and very sexy. They fit the bill of small size and support for audiobooks, but the close system of itunes puts me off. I like freedom of choice, I dont like being told which features are good for me. And then there is the price. They certainly can add more stuff to the nano at that price. I never got why I have to pay a premium for a brand name.

Enough bashing ipod, checking Audible support I came across sansa players. I have never owned a sansa player and I did not like the look of their first mp3 players. Maybe that is why I came to them at last, and found the Fuze. I read the reviews at amazon and other experts out there I decided to go for it.

Now that I have it, I am very surprised. It is almost as small as a nano, and just almost as sexy. I like the solid feel of the construction. The use of the wheel is intuitive and navigation is a breeze. The sound is great, but I was not surprised there. The sansa clip and fuze are one of the top sounding mp3 players out there. The slightly thicker size, by only 0.05 in compared to nano, is needed because it has an fm radio (you cant get that standard with the nano). Not a must for me, but very nice, when I just want to listen to some talk shows.

Another nice thing is voice recording. I get in meetings were assignments get dished out fast by not so well organized people. So I do record the assignments to see what I must do and who does everything else. When they start asking if I did this or that, I replay the voice recording and then tell them where to shove it.

Cons: the screen is not great for videos, but I knew that when I bought it. In album navigation, it wants to load a picture of the album cover. This is rather slow, I wish it did not do that. For the 8 Gbyte version, the one I bought, there is only one color option (grey color, it is not silver as it looks in the pic).

Well, overall, I love this player. It is my new toy and I am enjoying it and taking it to the gym. I strongly recommend it if you want an alternative player to the nano, you want to get more features, and pay less.

5 out of 5 stars no more apple   May 12, 2008

After having used an iPod mini for about 4 years, I decided it was time to try something else. Because of the unbeatable price of the Sansa Fuze and the nice features, I decided to buy this player - and I'm very happy I did! I added a 8gb microsd card, making it a 16gb player for only about $200.

The quality of the product seems to be very good, and the display does not get scrateches as fast as an iPod does. The display is very clear and bright, so you can even enjoy videos or movies on the Fuze, if you are all right with a small display. The handling is very similar to the iPod, so you will get comfortable with it quickly if you used an iPod previously.

I like being able to listen to FM radio from time to time or record something - that can be quite useful. The only little problem I have with the Fuze is that there are a few minor things in the software i don't like. Overall, however, i would definitely recommend buying the Fuze - it does not always have to be an apple, especially if you can get something better for a lower price!

5 out of 5 stars Fuses Value with Style   July 20, 2008

Cons

* Equalizer has only five bands, and the lowest band is too high: it sounds like it is about 100 Hz. Better would have been a seven- or nine-band equalizer with the lowest band at 60 Hz or, even better, at 40 Hz.
* No file browser.
* Unlike the Samsung T10, the Fuze does not come with a plastic sheet to protect the display screen from scratches.
* Cannot load a picture to use as wallpaper.
* Supplied earbuds are OK, but you should upgrade to something better if you care about sound quality.
* Scrolling through the songs list is slow.
* I like listening to my songs in alphabetical order. But whenever new songs are synced to the Fuze, the last song that was listened to is forgotten by the Fuze, forcing me to scroll through the songs list.

Pros

* Excellent sound quality.
* Easy to use.
* Selectable between Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) mode or Mass Storage Class (MSC) mode, so the Fuze should be compatible right out of the box with just about every modern home computer. Syncs with a wide variety of media players or just copy-and-paste your music.
* Relatively inexpensive for about 7.5 GB of actual usable memory.
* You can expand the memory by an additional 16 GB. Greater-capacity cards might be available in the future.
* Not as stylish as some Samsung or Apple MP3 players, but much better than previous ugly SanDisk MP3 players.
* Is heavy enough so that it does not feel like it came out of a cereal box.
* Six seconds to boot.
* Unlike a certain famous competitor, the Fuze has an FM-radio tuner and a built-in microphone for voice recordings. You can also record from the radio.
* Displays song ratings.
* Unlike the Samsung T10, you can display album art along with the name of the artist, the name of the album, and the name of the song while the song is playing. Press the thumbwheel a couple of times and you can get a bigger picture of the album art.
* Can browse by most-recently-added songs.

The actual colour of this MP3 player is grey, not silver. It compares very favourably with the Samsung T10. Four-and-a-half stars.

5 out of 5 stars Fuze + Linux - Awesome combination   October 28, 2008

I'm an avid Linux user. I've been searching for a good mp3 player which works with Linux without any additional drivers/libraries for the MTP protocol and which can handle audiobooks as well as music. The Sansa Fuze performs in spades. I love this little player. It connects to the linux box in MSC mode and allows easy file/directory transfer to the device. Audiobooks are handled completely separate from audiobooks. The benefit here is that I can switch between a book and my music without having to change settings for shuffle, EQ, or to remember exactly where I was in the audiobook and as the sansa remembers for me. Pictures (jpgs) are well handled. The unit will scale most jpgs to fit the screen. I've seen that 6MP+ pictures will often not scale dynamically, but why would you want to waste space on an mp3 player with 6MB picture files? Just scale them before propogation. In all, this player has been fantastic for the 2 weeks I've had it. I listen to audio books almost constantly (eleven unabridged books since receipt), and the player has not glitched once. I've thrown everything from 48kbs at 22k samples to 320kbs at 44.1k samples.
