Great sims like experience... March 25, 2006 A. Blackwell (San Francisco, CA USA) 5 out of 11 found this review helpful
With only a few words, I can say this game is fun, engagging, and well worth the price of admission. However, the only cons I can find are sometimes the advanced movie making techniques are a little linear and making the best studio in the world can be extremely difficult since making high quality films in the game all depends on what the game designers think high quality entials. Besides these little nit picks, this game is fun and when it comes down to it, that's all that matters.
It's about the movies May 6, 2006 booksforabuck (Dallas) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
The Movies is really two games in one. In the first, you play a studio head, try to win awards, try to keep your actors happy, worry about your money. In the second, the Sandbox Mode, you make movies. As far as games go, I thought The Movies was only okay. It's hard to figure what you're doing wrong, difficult to find the balance between drunkenness and stress, and the movies the game makes for you are pretty bad. But--you can make movies. For me, this was the key. I don't have the money or artistic talent to create animated movies from scratch, but I can do it with this game. I created one as a version of my short story, A Tactical Error, and it came out pretty well--and I've learned to edit a lot better since. Even with dozens of sets and a lot of flexibility on actors, there are some frustrations in getting sets and actions right, but with a little creativity (and careful downloading of mods), you can create the movie version of whatever story you want. For me, that's an incredible accomplishment.

Great Sim for setting up a movie studio and planning all the aspects of making a bona-fide movie.
Machinima and Lionhead's The Movies December 12, 2005 Evil Jesus (Canada) 11 out of 14 found this review helpful
From Carey DeVuono's "Hollywood Mogul," a detailed, text-based film studio simulation, to Astrogon.de's "Hollywood Tycoon," an excellent German 'Tycoon-Style' game; there have been several good offers in the 'Movie-Sim' genre. This latest gem from Lionhead Studios is hands-down the best created to date. Fans of this type of sim will notice that in very real terms, the depth of gameplay is far superior to anything else out there. The level of detail, the AI of the characters and the sheer number of customization possibilities make this game a real winner for those who like to be truly immersed in their game. There is one very important feature, however, which stands out as unique in the genre, and that is the ability to export movies with custom content, including music, sound effects and voice-over, to a video file you can then edit in an external program like Adobe Premiere. This feature alone, given the virtually unlimited potential for producing unique 'Machinima' films, will ensure a place in gaming history for this title. In short, a film made using Machinima (Ma-sheen-EH-ma) is created with computer-generated graphics, similar to those in titles like "Antz" and "Toy Story". Machinima, however, uses graphical techniques originally developed for computer games to generate its visuals, meaning that a film-maker with a home PC can create feature-length epics that would require millions of dollars to make using traditional CGI techniques. A Machinima artist can make his or her film in real time, rather than painstakingly animating frame by frame. Specifically, The Movies allows the player to load a blank 'script' into the "Advanced Movie Maker," where scenes are chosen and arranged based on their similarity to the story the player wants to tell. When satisfied with the script, it is then brought to "Casting," where the director, stars and extras are chosen. After casting is complete, the actual "shooting" takes place on the chosen sets. The last step is "Post Production," the most intriguing from my perspective as an animator. As a beginner I was intimidated by Premiere and other similar editing program's sheer complexity. It's nice to see the collection of basic and powerful tools provided in this area of the game, from simple fades, audio levels, a 'Razor-based' tool for cutting and a trash bin where unwanted bits can be deposited. It is possible to intentionally place scenes which are far too long, or contain unwanted parts, with the knowledge that the final editing process is capable of highly precise cuts. In summary, this game deserves a serious look by those who are Tycoon fans, and a thorough inspection by Machinima devotees. It is capable of providing, at the very least, hours of intense gaming enjoyment, and at best it's the 'Holy Grail' of 'Zero-Budget' filmmaking.
HOURS of fun! February 16, 2006 pandora80 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
Okay, I'll admit, this can be a very difficult game to play if you're not good at figuring things like this out on your own. Like someone before me said, the tutorial is not very adequate, so you definitely do have to figure alot out for yourself. What I would suggest to you is that you play in sandbox mode until you get EVERY aspect of the game, and you know where everything is and what it does. Basically, just experiment like crazy with it! Keep in mind that when you start the real game mode, you only start out with $150,00, whereas in sandbox mode you can start out with as much as $100,000,000. Also in sandbox mode, you don't get to experience award ceremonies, which, truthfully, I really enjoy. However, it will prepare you to such an extent that when you play in game mode, you will be capable of winning many awards.
