5 out of 5 stars Socom is the best team oriented shooter game   October 15, 2008

First the headset:
It is bigger than the Warhawk Jabra headset and a little heavier too, but it doesn't really bother me.
The headset cradle is really handy for charging the headset.
The light indicator showing if it is fully charge or charging is really cool.
The sound quality is really great and other Socom players have confirmed this with me while in game.

The game installation:
The worst installation ever!!!
First you need to disable auto-start disc or the game will not work.
Then, underneath the game disc on the XMB you need to run an installer first. This thing takes long to install, so be patient.
After that you can run the game, but it will prompt you to download an update, which again takes a long time.
For some reason after the update the game was saying that my saved game profile was corrupted so I had to deleted and run the game again.

The game
The menus are all the same as the beta and all the options you get for weapons, head, face, gear and all those are the same.
I logged into a West Coast server and played in a game with 16 players. The game loaded fast and initially I felt no lag in this Factory map where we were playing TDM. Later another map with a factory flooded and kind of redish loaded and we were playing with the satchel. This time there was a bit of stop and go lag, but for most of the game it was minimal.
I was really impressed with the quality of the graphics and the sound was excellent.
It wasn't as fun as playing with friends though, because those people I was playing with didn't want to communicate and they were just doing their own thing, which is playing like a TDM. It wasn't until I started to communicate that they were like, wha?, Ah? Oh Ok.... bunch of n00bs

Oh, by the way, my Internet is really sucky, 1.5 Mbps download and 300 kbps upload. ATT should be upgrading me to 3.0 down and 500 up tonight. I can't wait.

5 out of 5 stars Get ready to ruin your social life   November 16, 2008

This is a sweet game. It's got a lot of bugs still, but overall, it's better than COD4 in the fact that not all of it is "run and gun," (not sure how COD5 is yet). However, just like other versions of socom, you're going to get the glitchers that will ruin some of your games, but most of the time you're finding rooms with real players. On the con side, it's hard to connect some of the time, you'll get a little bit of lag some of the time, and every now and then, i'll hear someone that's lost their sound on the other end of the mic (hasn't happened to me yet). But all of these are really minor considering they might happen once out of twenty times. Oh, and the initial download is just uncalled for, so when you get it, plug it in, hit the download button, and go somewhere for a couple of hours, because that's how long it will take to load into your ps3. On the pro side, the bluetooth is pretty flawless, and it's a good package deal (I think I caught it for $55 on a pre-order for both the game and mic), and it's flat out addicting. Overall, this game is pretty fun, and if you're not a freak about how perfect a game should be when it first comes out, you'll really like this one.

5 out of 5 stars Promising SOCOM   October 30, 2008

Yes, this game have so many problems (lagging, freezing, kicks you out from rooms, etc.) when it was launched. SOCOM development team are resolving these cases and issuing updates and game patches that are fixing the game so well.
Second thing, this game intended to be an "ONLINE" game only. So please do not complain or rate it as it does not have a story mode. The stand alone game original price is $40 and if you go with the bundle it will be $60 including the official headset for PS3. So you are paying only for the online game for $40 which I think is reasonable.
Oh, and I have to tell you about the headset too. Initially I thought it is one of the heavy ones that will be paining to use for long time, but I was totally wrong. The headset is so light and it feels comfortable. Even if I compare it with other headsets that I used with my PS3 system, this one have the settings displayed in the TV screen when you lower or rise the volume, mute the microphone, etc. Other headsets won't display any status message on the TV screen, which was a plus for this headset. The price of the headset if bought alone is $50. So think about it, buying a game and official Sony headset for $60. No comments! :)
I was one of the people who got this game so early where I faced so many hanging problems and lagging. The game was just unplayable. But after the new update (29/10/2008) the game quality increased dramatically, which eliminated most (if not all) the problems faced earlier.
The game itself is really fun. The gameplay, sounds, graphics, weapons, controls, menues, and servers are really good and fastly adaptive. If you like army shooting online games (3rd person), then this should be in your tv shelves.
I really recommend buying this version (with bluetooth headset) of the game to all people who like action war online games.

5 out of 5 stars Run & Gun = Run & Die   October 20, 2008

Socom is a very cool game. I was (and perhaps still am) a CoD4 online junky. Now I have some fresh new junk to get addicted to.

Why would I need Socom if I already have an online shooter that I'm addicted to? Because Socom is truly different. This is a team tactical shooter and CoD4 is run out into the map and kill as many people as you can shooter.

The key to success (for me anyway) in Socom is "stick together".

You play as either a Commando or a Mercenary. Once in a lobby you can switch teams and during intermissions the game will regularly switch your whole team back and forth from Mercenary to a Commando. You can create about 5 Mercenary profiles and 5 Commando profiles; and you can change the weapon loadouts in game.

There are assault rifles, submachine guns, light machine guns, shotties, sniper rifles, and one extra rifle from a group of 5 that are available depending on whether you're in a clan and what clan you're in (Spain, France, Germany, UK or US).

All of the rifles and the following gear and stuff are available to everyone; I don't think there's any unlocking or leveling up needed. Your rewards for quality play instead are status, medals & stars.

The gear is kind of cool, but I'm pretty sure that the best loadout is the simple one: M67 frag grenades. The missile launchers are effective, but cumbersome. The claymores have to be detonated versus the CoD4 kind that blew up if an enemy walked near it. So for now, I'm sticking to the grenades.

One thing to note is that each weapon needs to be equipped. In other words, there's not a dedicated button on the controller to throw a grenade or switch to a launcher. You need to bring your selected secondary weapons up on a display by pressing O. Once a secondary weapon is selected you can switch back and forth between it and a primary weapon by pressing L1 (no, L1 is not your sight button; sight is up on the D pad...and to get off your sight you must press down on the D pad). (You can custom configure the wireless controller to your own liking if you don't like the default or other presets.)

The attachments for your weapons are plentiful: scopes, regular and laser sites, silencers, bipod and grenade launchers. Each attachment is not available on every weapon. And be careful, a laser sight will give away your position in night games.

Oh yeah, night games...you'll need your nightvision goggles for those. Navigating the maps takes a little getting used to, but as I said earlier, you should be pretty much sticking together with your team...follow them and take a position. That's right...there's some camping to be done here...but be smart: stay in one place too long and you'll be dead faster than you can say WTF!

And speaking of dead, I believe that you only get rewards by playing "ranked" matches. Friendly fire is on and there is no respawning. There are 4 v 4 matches, 8 v 8 and higher; so when you play Socom, in some matches you'll be atop the leaderboard with 2 kills. I personally have enjoyed the two smaller group matches, but that's a matter of preference.

So communicate with your team! Someone on your team is probably familiar with the map. Ask where to go. There's no stupid or noob questions here; the players that I've met got more mad when their team members didn't communicate and use their mics than they did when someone says "what should we do?"

Speaking of the mic, I bought the Stand Alone edition of Socom, because I have the Plantronics Voyager 510 Bluetooth Headset and it works great. But if you want to take advantage of all of the perks (like on screen volume and stuff) that were in the PS3 2.5 firmware update, then you should probably go with this edition that includes the new official PS3 Headset.

This game rocks. Some of the maps according to some of the folks that I've played with are carry-overs from past Socom games. That gives Socom vets a bit of an early advantage. But it won't be long before I'm navigating these maps on point instead of following my team.

Buy Socom if you play online.

Side note on initial game installation: If your PS3 is set to auto-start discs you might need to disable that the first time you plug in the disc. After you put the game in, you'll see two icons on the XMB for Socom; one installs the game, the other starts it. Install the game first. For some reason even after you run the installer, the game installer icon doesn't disappear; just be sure to start that game with start icon going forward. After the installation I got an error message that said my "saved data" was corrupted....so I deleted the Socom saved data from the XMB (NOT the "game" data...the "saved" data) and the error message disappeared.

Another side note: As of this writing, there are major server issues. Load delays. Freezes. Choppy action and more. Slant 6 Games NEEDS to fix these. If you release a game that is online only, you should release it when you are ready to set the bar for online gaming...not be a work in progress.

5 out of 5 stars SOCOM, not for COD fanboys   November 13, 2008

SOCOM CONFRONTATION is probably the best game to hit the PS3. Awesome graphics, insanely fun gameplay and cohesive communication make it the next gen online shooter you want to own.

Like all multiplayer games before it it has a few bugs at launch, which are being worked out, like other multiplayer games. A lot of people who play COD dont care to much for CONFRONTATION. But you gotta have skills to be good at it, its not a snoozefest and it doesnt do half the work for you. Get this game, find a good clan, learn some skills and dominate the enemy.

If your not sure at least rent it and see for yourself.
