| Playstation 3 Features Blu-Ray is the New Way Sony's PlayStation 3 games are encoded onto the Blu-Ray disc media format, which can hold six times as much data as traditional DVDs. This increase in capacity--combined with the awesome power of its processor and graphics card--promises mind-blowing games once developers have learned how to fully harness the new console's power. The PS3 will also support CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R formats. In addition, PlayStation 3 system software update version 2.20 and up includes BD Live support. With this you can now play discs that support Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0 (BD-LIVE) and you can also connect to the Internet while playing discs that support this format so that you can obtain additional features. Features that are available vary depending on the software in use. - The Dualshock 3 Rumble Wireless Controller
The Dualshock 3 Rumble wireless controller for the PlayStation 3 system provides the most intuitive game play experience with pressure sensors in each action button and the inclusion of the highly sensitive SIXAXIS motion sensing technology. Each hit, crash and explosion is more realistic when the user feels the rumble right in the palm of their hand. It can even detect natural movements for real-time and high precision interactive play, acting as a natural extension of the user’s body. Dualshock 3 wireless controller utilizes Bluetooth technology for wireless game play and the controller’s USB cable to seamlessly and automatically charge the controller through the PlayStation 3 system at anytime. - Plays All PlayStation Games
The PlayStation 3 will be backward compatible with PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games, which means you'll be able to play all your favorite games without keeping all the old systems. The console will have slots for Memory Stick Duo, an SD slot and a Compact Flash memory slot. It comes with a pre-installed hard disc drive, which allows you to save games as well as download content from the Internet.
- Included in this bundle Metal Gear Solid 4!
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, is a next-gen experience complete with top-of-the-line graphics and surround sound designed for the Sony PlayStation 3. Featuring the most revealing display of Kojima Production's premier title, MSG4 details the world where Snake must under go his final mission. In a world overrun by private military companies (PMCs), wars are no longer fought over nations or ideologies. Instead, the wars of the future are micro-managed by overarching PMCs, right down to the bullet. New gadgets and abilities fuel Snake's journey deep into the enemy domains of the Middle East, South America, and beyond. New gear includes "Metal Gear Mk. II," the ultimate reconnaissance tool, and "Solid Eye," which gives Snake real-time information on enemies and his surroundings. Joined by a familiar cast of characters, Snake must once again return to the battlefield to confront his lifelong rival, Liquid Ocelot, who is manipulating the world's wars from the one world where soldiers will always have a place. But Liquid Ocelot is not the only one who will be able to manipulate the world's wars--Snake can destabilize opposing forces by working behind the scenes, supporting the local militia as they fight PMCs, creating a smokescreen that allows Snake to move freely within the war-zone.
- Online
Sony has stated that the PS3 will have similar online connectivity and services as the next generation of Xbox Live. Calling it "an always on, always connected device," SCEI's chief technical officer Masa Chatani said the PS3 would be constantly in touch with a "PlayStation World" network "fundamentally based on community, communication commerce, and content." Technically, the infrastructure is there to make that connection. The PS3 supports 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T Ethernet, as well as IEEE 802.11 b/g wireless networking protocols. |

PS3 Metal Gear Solid Bundle - Premium Bundle for Gaming and Entertainment June 26, 2008 Mark (NY, NJ, CT USA) 50 out of 62 found this review helpful
I was happy when Sony lowered the price on their Playstation 3 40GB, but it took until they released this PlayStation 3 80 GB Metal Gear Solid 4 Pack for me to pull the trigger. Not only do you get the PS3 with all the cool stuff that's included with it and an 80 GB hard drive, but you also get latest in a great game franchise with Metal Gear Solid 4. For starters, setup was pretty straight forward. If you look at the technical details and product details you will see plenty of inputs and outputs and built-in hardware features including wireless. It only took me just over an hour to get it all hooked up with my home entertainment center and home network. Obviously, most people get the PS3 for pure gaming. Even though there are still not as many games as for the Xbox360, many of the games that are out there are awesome. For now, you don't have to worry about the cost of Xbox Live when it comes to online play. Most XBox Live people get yearly subscriptions that bring down that monthly cost, especially if you pick them up on sale. Still, I like Sony's model better, though I've heard they are thinking of going to a subscription model in the near future. I hope they don't, but we'll see. It's also no secret you can play BluRay disks on this guy. With BluRay players like the Sony BDP-S301 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player BD/DVD/CD Playback with Bonus HDMI Cable going for just under what the PS3 will cost you, it's no wonder some people buy this as their BR player. The cost will hopefully come down eventually, but now that HD DVD is gone it probably won't come down fast enough. Being able to use this guy as a media player and collect music and video files on it is also a nice plus. The XBox 360 does this too, and I personally like those functions on that guy better. But that's mainly because I am a heavy Windows Media Center user and like being able to integrate the 360. Still, the amount of stuff you can do with this guy is too much to count. I can't comment on reliability first hand yet, since this bundle is pretty new to me. I have definitely heard more complaints about the 360 in terms of durability. While the PS3 does cost a little more for the games and hardware than the 360 or Wii, it does give you more built-in hardware features out of the box. Once you buy the Xbox 360 Elite Bundle and all the extras you need to give it similar features, the cost is about the same or higher. I'm definitely glad I got this. If you can get this bundle, it's probably a better value than the base unit. Enjoy!
The perfect enterntainment console June 17, 2008 Manuel Guzman (Elk Grove, CA) 52 out of 63 found this review helpful
First of all, this is my second PS3 console. I already own the original Sony 60GB PS3 version and for a long time, I have wanted a second one to have in my bedroom as a Blu-ray player and to play certain games I can't play with my newborn around the house (i.e. Metal Gear Solid 4). I love this console so much. As a media center, it does almost everything. It is the only gaming console to be fully Divx certified. And obviously, it plays back Blu-ray movies. In fact, it is probably still the best Blu-ray player you can purchase today. The gaming library has improved quite a bit since the original launch of the console. I've been looking forward to Metal Gear Solid 4 for quite a long time. It was well worth the wait. I didn't think I would be a fan of the Dual Shock 3 controller as I usually could care less for rumble but it actually works well with Metal Gear Solid 4 and it weighs more than the original Sixaxis controller. For me, it is the perfect weight, better than the Sixaxis which I always though was too lite. I would have hoped they would have fixed a couple of annoyances by now. First of all, the USB cable is too short. You won't be able to really play a game while charging your controller unless you don't mind standing right in front of the tv. They should really make the USB cable longer. Why in 2008 is Sony still shipping the PS3 with composite cables? They could have at least shipped it with component video cables. It could be my imagination but it seems as if my 80GB PS3 is slightler less noisier than the 60GB I own. I don't know if this means the 80GB uses the smaller cooler cell processor but it would be great if it did. The 80GB hard drive can really fill up fast but fortunately, Sony was kind enough to allow a user to easily swap the hard drive out for any notebook sized SATA hard drive. I upgraded my Macbook Pro hard drive to a 320GB hard drive and transferred the old Macbook Pro hard drive to my 60GB Sony PS3. I may upgrade the hard drive on this 80GB PS3 soon as well. Some people do not like the fact that the PS3 uses Bluetooth for it's remote contol. For me, this is better since it allows me to hide the PS3 out of sight where it doesn't clutter up space and also makes the console sound less audible while watching movies or playing games. In summary, you can't go wrong with the Sony PS3, especially when you order from Amazon. I also own a Nintendo Wii (sold my Xbox 360 because of the RRoD). I think it really compliments the Nintendo Wii a lot and fills in where the Nintendo Wii lacks. Aside from the gripes I made earlier, I also would have preferred if Sony would have upgraded the wireless controller to N instead of G. This would allow me to stream HD content wirelessly. But it's not that big of deal because a lot of times, I just copy content to my PS3 hard drive. Oh yes, I have a large collection of PS2 games and so far, they seem to be working although I have not had a chance to try all of them.
Replace my 360 with a PS3 August 19, 2008 Hardware Addict (Shreveport, LA) 11 out of 14 found this review helpful
PS3 Pros -On the PS3 online gaming is Free. They are not charging you 50 bucks a year so you can play online. Should be free in the first place. -Bluray Player included -Upconverting to 1080P assuming you have a Full HD TV and use HDMI -7.1 -No advertising all over the dashboard like MS does -No Overheating Now most of the games that are coming out on the xbox360 are coming on the PS3 -You can upgrade your drive (you must use a SATA laptop hard drive. 5400 RPM is recommended as the firmware sets the read write access speed) -It is Quiet -Don't have to buy a wireless adapter it comes with it. almost 100 bucks for the xbox 360 -The unit can read xvid and divx. -Controller Rumbles. Just make sure you have patched your games. (without the patch the controller doesn't rumble if you play Resistance). -The graphics are as good as the one's on thexbox360 (if not better). As matter of fact I'm not a convert I'm just going with what is better for my wallet and gives me more. With the latest firware the PS3 really delivers. IT is only going to get better. AND THE BEST FOR THE LAST It comes with Folding@home. Love that feature Cons: My PS3 does about everything but doesn't wash my dishes. Sigh I sold my 360 because that piece of junk died on me after 6 months. Had to ship it back to ms and was without a console for a month. Bought a second one and that one died too. I'm so done with the 360. I had some great moment on the xbox dont get me wrong but it is time to move on. Too much advertising on the dashboard...anoying. For the people paying the 50 bucks it should be advertising free.
Great Game System for the Price! July 24, 2008 X (Saint Louis, Missouri USA) 9 out of 13 found this review helpful
I must admit, I didn't buy this bundle game system because of Metal Gear Solid 4. I purchased it, because of three other factors: 1. Its more cost effective than purchasing the 40 gig PS3. You get a dual shock controller with vibration, 40 more gig hard drive, ability to play 70% of PS2 games and of course a free game, all for $499. If you purchased the 40 gig PS3 at $399, you'll still have to buy a game at $60, which is $459. So, for an extra $40 bucks, you get all the extra bells and whistles. Anybody that has any common sense knows this is a better deal. 2. When I purchased this bundle, I got no payments or finance charges for 18 months. So in essences, I'm paying less than $30 a month, which is a sweet deal. I'll pay it off before the 18 months is over. That's the only way I would have paid over $500 for a game. 3. God of War 3 is coming out next year and by the time its out, I would have paid off my PS3. Don't get me wrong, from what I heard, the Metal Gear Solid series, including number 4 is a great series. And I have Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3. I just haven't played them yet, so before I start playing MGS4, I'll play 2 & 3. For right now, the system works great. I have no complaints. I placed mine in my entertainment stand. The PS3 does get very warm. So, I cut a hole in the back of the shelve, where the PS3 sits and brought a very small, but powerful fan from Wal-mart and placed it outside the back of the shelve, where the PS3 sits, and the fan pull all of the warm air out through the back of my stand. Kind-of-like a homemade ventilation system and it works great! I had considered buying these attachable "cooling" fans for my PS3, however, I heard so many conflicting information about them, that I decided to make my own. Which I'm happy I did. The fan from Wal-mart only cost me $5 bucks. The other "cooling" devices cost as much as $30 bucks, so I saved even more money. Thank God! With high gas prices I can stand to save every dime I get. I only play my PS3 about 3-4 hours a week, and I'm still playing my first PS3 game (Medal of Honor Airborne, I purchased it with my bundle). I like to master a game before moving on to the next game. But for any person the want something to do during some down time or a serious gamer, I would recommend this system to you.
Awesome Blu-ray Player and Media Server July 2, 2008 K. Holt (Lomita, CA United States) 8 out of 15 found this review helpful
I am not a big gamer and mainly bought this because it's a Blu-ray player and media server. I already have a Panasonic DMP-BD30K but wanted to get a second player for the bedroom. I was actually considering another DMP-BD30K but they are still more expensive than what I paid about 6 months ago before Blu-ray won the battle. The thing keeping me away from the Playstation 3 in the first place was the Bluetooth remote and the lack of DTS HD at all before the update and the fact that it still won't bitstream any of the HD formats. I have an Onkyo receiver that decodes them so it gives me that warm fuzzy feeling to see the audio formats in it's display. I was also kind of waiting for the new Panasonic DMP-BD50 but after seeing the price I said forget it. I decided to give the Playstation 3 another look now that they at least can decode DTS HD. I was really interested in the media server all along because I have a tape based HD camcorder and with no Blu-ray burner yet it is hard to watch my videos on the TV unless I want to hook up the camera and mess with tapes. I do have a DirecTV HD DVR that has a media server built in but it is very buggy so far and only supports a few formats. If this 80GB model was readily available I thought it was a no brainer to get it for the bigger HD, dual shock 3 controller and the game it comes with even though like I said I am not a big gamer. But since I didn't feel like running around town or camping out somewhere or waiting until they became readily available I decided I was fine with the 40GB model. I normally buy everything online but I had a gift card for Best Buy so I decided to buy it there even though the tax ate up most of the gift card. So I ask the guy if he can get me one out of the cage and while he is getting the keys I ask almost rhetorically if he has any of the 80GB models buried somewhere. He turns around and kind of looks at me and asks if I want one. I of course say why yes I do. He tells me they just got 66 in and haven't even received them yet but that he can go in the back and get me one. I say pretty please. So anyway I got very lucky there. So I have to say this thing is awesome. The media server is great I can play all kinds of videos from the HD Mpeg 2 stuff that I have transfered to my computer from my camcorder, DVDs that I have ripped to my HD, pictures, music, you name it. It also plays Blu-rays way better than my Panasonic DMP-BD30K. The quality looks the same but skipping chapters and fast forwarding and rewinding works way better and less clunky, about as good as regular DVDs did on DVD players. Downloading trailers and stuff from the internet with it is fun too. I messed around with Metal Gear Solid for a while. It took me probably an hour to get it all installed and download updates and register for an online account. I am not used to the console controls since I normally play PC based games and on the easiest setting I couldn't do anything but get killed so I gave up for now. Even though I can't control the Playstation 3 with my universal remote, the Bluetooth remote is awesome not having to have a line of sight. Some of the down sides are this thing uses up to 380 watts of power where a normal player only uses like 10 watts or something like that. It puts out a lot of heat. The 40 GB model uses a newer architecture that actually uses less power and runs cooler. I have an enclosed cabinet but it is pretty big and it has it's own shelf with a lot of air space around it so I thought it would be OK but I got the overheat message in like 10 minutes so I had to cut two 3" diameter holes in the back of the cabinet right behind it. If it does get warm the fans are super loud but they aren't bad at their lowest setting if it doesn't get too warm. If you have a receiver that decodes the HD audio codecs you won't be able to make use of it since this thing won't bitstream them. It will probably take a while to teach the wife how to watch a Blu-ray again. She has a hard enough time with the standalone player and this thing is a lot more complicated. I definitely wish I would have bought this thing a long time ago though. I am loving it so far. It is almost as good as having a stand alone media center PC. If you can live with the few small draw backs this thing is a killer deal since they are banking on making their money on the games.
