Golden Compass September 25, 2008 For a replica, they sure went all out! I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel some sort of 'mysticalness' about it. Looking at it, If you imagine hard enough, you could probably see Indiana Jones picking through some tumbledown ruins searching for it! It was well worth what I paid. Another great item from Amazon to be sure, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
bargain of the century! March 18, 2008 Daniel D. Engelman 8 out of 27 found this review helpful
With the terrible shape of the economy, I've been looking for some sound investments. The price of Gold is up to ~ $1,000 an ounce, so when I saw a 1 LB Golden Compass for only $15 I jumped on it! I emptied the family bank account and bought 173 of these things. I cant wait till my wife comes home to share the good news!
A good and inexpensive Alethiometer(tm) replica July 11, 2008 Damion F. Chaplin (Walnut Creek, CA Earth) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
As a collector of what I call "Objets de Sci-Fi", I love it when I find an inexpensive replica from a movie I love. I own many replicas, from a Crysknife to a Tricorder to a Babylon 5 PPG and my new Alethiometer(tm) fits right in nicely. It is, for the most part, an accurate representation of the prop seen on the screen. The accuracy is spoiled only by the blue button on the face of the dial that causes the "answer" pointer to spin to a random symbol when pressed. However, the exterior is highly and accurately detailed and when the Alethiometer(tm) is closed, it looks just fantastic. It has three knobs around the rim that allow you to move the three "question" hands to three symbols and a weak spring-loaded hinge that pops the lid open when you press a latch under the 'front' knob. The plastic is not really gold-colored, more of a brown-bronze color, so I think I'll take a bottle of gold-leaf paint to it, but what can you expect from a children's toy? (Besides, gold-colored plastic is notorious for breaking easily after it's aged a little). The leather-looking plastic carrying pouch is unremarkable, but it does look like the pouch Lyra uses in the movie. In conclusion, if you're looking for an inexpensive replica of an Alethiometer(tm) (because you can't stomach $195 for the Noble Collection's replica), or your child likes to carry around their stuffed ferret pretending they're Lyra, don't pass this one up!
What's electric about the Alethiometer? March 22, 2008 G. Tavaglione (New Hampshire, USA) 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
After seeing the movie 'The Golden Compass' I found this plastic replica online. I keep seeing it listed as 'electric' but it isn't. It's spring-loaded to make the needle move. As a toy for role playing it's quite cool although I read the trilogy and don't see it as a story for pre-teens - much too dark and heavy. But it does come in a nice carry-pouch. I bought it because I collect divination 'objects'. Would like to see a real metal one - at a price I can afford!
