Editorial Review
With its ingenious design, the Gearation Activity Set lets preschoolers assemble clicking, whirring, googly-eyed machines all by themselves. Eleven colorful plastic gears adhere magnetically to a 14-by-16-inch easel, so kids are free to arrange them in any order they can dream up. The gear in the center powers the whole contraption. The various gears (each measuring from 1 to 3 inches across) all do something different, whether it's making a noise or just turning a brightly colored arm, and kids can control the gear speeds with fat, easy-to-grab switches. And since all the parts are cleverly connected by magnets, you don't have to worry about the motor burning out. --Paul Hughes

5 out of 5 stars A toy complete with messmerizing movement and super sounds!   July 13, 1999

Gearation Activity Set is a winner! The colorful magnetic discs interlock, giving little hands an opportunity to learn about cogs, gears and magnets simultaneously. With 2 speeds of movement and a seemingly unending number of combinations, this toy allows children to create their own "moving picture" complete with sound! The discs are colorful, well-made and easy for a 3-4 year old to interlock. It's movement is messmerizing to children and adults as well. A great toy!

My 3 year old daughter has had little interest in any building type toys. This one has capured her attention for independant play for up to 30 minutes at a time. Its fun even for adults.

One of the few toys the kids still pull from the closet from this past Christmas. Purchased for a four year old the two year old has started to play with it recently and finds it pretty challenging but for the most part has figured it out. Definitely worth the price, well made and fun. Educational? Educational is overated in my opinion but if you want something that the kids will have to figure out with different speeds, reverse and forward, then I suppose it's educational. It's not chess but it is fun.

5 out of 5 stars A great toy that will entertain for months!   March 29, 2001

I bought the original Gearation set for my son for Christmas two years ago. He was almost three. Now I'm buying the add-on set (the Gearation Amusement Park) for his fifth birthday becase he and I (and his sisters, stepdad, friends, and other family) had so much fun with the original set. It demonstrates some fundamental mechanics in a fun way, and it's accessible without guidelines or instructions. It's been durable too - not only has it survived lots of use for the last two years, it has also been transported in an RV across the country when we moved house from CA to TX. It's there now on his toy shelf, waiting for the next time he has a friend over to play - it's one of the favorite play-with-a-buddy toys for my son, and one that he and I have enjoyed together also. It won't survive a lot of exposure to the outdoors, but it is a super rainy day toy, and it can be set up anywhere (including in a car). We love it, and I would recommend it to anyone for a kid aged 3-6.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating toddler toy   December 11, 2000

Although it says 3 to 7 years old, we bought Gearation for our son at about 2 1/2 because it is featured in the Baby Mozart video and he was always so fascinated with it. We felt okay about this because we didn't see any parts so small that they were a choking hazard.

I actually think this is more fun and educational for younger toddlers. I can see how older kids would get bored quickly with it, but it teaches younger children basic mechanical skills and gives them an understanding of how things fit together. He would love to create various patterns of gears and watch them spin.

Our son is almost 3 now and he still enjoys playing with it after about six months, a fairly long duration by comparison with other toys. I recommend it highly.
