Editorial Review Move over, man's best friend, the iDog's here! Nourished exclusively on music (although, like all of us, it appreciates a little positive attention), the palm-sized iDog moves and grooves to the rhythm of your musical beat. For a robotic canine, the iDog is remarkably expressive, employing an entertaining assortment of flashing lights, head tilts, ear lifts, and even growls (should you flick its tail). Plug it into a portable music device with the included dual connector cable, and watch it respond while the built-in speaker plays along. All dogs like to be off the leash, however, so iDog can go wireless, too--simply place it next to a speaker, or take it anywhere music is playing. With such winning design, even those skeptical of robotic toys may find themselves giving it a pat on the head to reward it for rocking well done, or pressing its nose to let the pup take a nap. Multicolored lights, sounds, and movements, along with a "personality" programmed by your continued musical input, keep the iDog fun and interesting. --Heather Lyndon

Pooch Packs Potent Portable Light Show October 24, 2005 Jerry P. Danzig (New York, NY USA) 135 out of 145 found this review helpful
I saw this little guy dancing to the music in a store, and the next thing you know, he had come home with me! idog is a real cutie. Though you could use him as an ipod mono speaker -- and yes, I consider the speaker pretty robust for such a diminutive pooch -- I think he shines the brightest as a palm-sized portable light show for your music. The LED light display on his face is something to see, with a variety of colors and animated patterns that adapt to the music you play, and from time to time idog will wag his head and raise or lower his ears in time to the beat. Throw in the doggy behavior -- he mopes if you leave him alone without music and growls when you turn him off -- and idog is a most amusing desktop companion. I am definitely looking forward to the idog bags, as it would be fun to bring him to a party, and the bags look like they would give his head the support he needs to travel without injury. I also saw a picture of the mini-mutt wearing one of his "chill sets" -- a hat, ear muffs, and sweater to ward off the cold weather -- and it was hilarious to be sure. I use rechargeable AAA batteries in idog and get hours of use on a charge. A great little pal for all the music lovers on your shopping list!
An adult perspective; I should have bought two! October 3, 2005 K. G. Hubbell 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
I bought the iDog just because it was so darned cute, and "trick". Though I read a review somewhere that the speaker "bites", it's just right for private listening while I'm reading or paying bills, instead of using the house stereo and making everyone else listen to my personal music. I move iDog from bedroom nightstand to kitchen, hook it up to my XM receiver, walk it down to the basement while folding laundry, or out to the yard. "He" is loud enough to be heard rooms away at top volume (with surprisingly little distortion), but subtle enough at very low volume to be private - and not disturb the neighbors. When my granddaughter listens I'm not worried she'll stick the earphones in and deafen herself. He does "bark" once in a while, a serious source of amusement when the real dogs in the house look at iDog with that tilted-head, ears-up look of "Say what?" To watch iDog adjust the motion and lights to classical, then hard rock, then to Bill Cosby or The Smothers Brothers.... it's a riot! The batteries have lasted through an amazing number of hours of constant play with no sign of fading. It doesn't seem that a volume control on the dog itself would be convenient; it's easier to grab your iPod or XM remote and adjust the volume. As long as you don't delude yourself that it's a replacement for your $2,000 home stereo system you'll have fun with iDog.
fun for all ages November 21, 2005 D. Lewis (Glendora, Ca USA) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
My 11 year old received this for his birthday. He had been saving money for an ipod and we bought this to go along with it. He can't get enough of this toy. It sits on his desk and sways its head when he is doing homework and it makes the cutest noises. Even my 5 year old will sit for hours and watch it. It's smaller than I thought it would be, but seems pretty durable and works really well. Quite a hit for that in between age!
A great toy for introducing children to music October 26, 2005 Calvin (Mass.) 17 out of 19 found this review helpful
I recently got an iDog, wanting to see what all the excitement was about. It turns out that is is a fun little toy to put next to your stereo. It flashes lights in tune with whatever music you have playing and shakes its head and ears as well. I found I didn't use the built-in speaker too much when it was with my regular stereo, but it works well when you plug it into an iPod or other portable device. It certainly won't revolutionize your music system, but it's a fun little toy and a welcome diversion from work or whatever else you have going on while listening to your music. It picked up the music coming from my stereo at a pretty good range. This is an especially great toy for young children. It gives them something to look at while playing music and can be a great tool to introduce kids to any sort of music. It also seems pretty durable and I've had no problems at all with it. It also features a few interactive modes. You can "pet" it by covering a light sensor on the top of its head, and you can push its nose to play with it as well. It also will play back the type of music you lisen to the most if you double-tap the nose. That was an interesting little feature since my collection is fairly ecclectic and it was interesting to see how that changed. This a great buy for you if you have small children, or if you're like me and just like little robotic gadgets to go along with your other electronics.
This toy is neat and worth the money October 12, 2005 B. Knight (Detroit MI) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Ok I am Toys R Us employee and usually don't believe that things are what they appear to be. We tested one of these to see how many we could sale and it was really neat. I mean the lights are fun and the head movements are fun along with the ears. I like how you can move his paws to have him somewhat lay down. I also love how the tail is the on and off switch. Makes it real easy to shut off when the phone rings. Toys R Us stores sale this toy for 24.99 and it was worth it. It only uses 2AA batteries and I have been playing mine non stop for several days now and it works great. Its a great way to have people listen to music in a room instead of passing the ipod around just plug and go. Very easy to use. Put batteries in and plug him in and then play away. I also like that if you put him next to a normal radio that the speaker that is on the cord picks it up and he will dance. Hes just so cute hanging out and makes it fun to see what hes going to do cause its different for each type of music. This would be a great christmas gift. Great for all ages. Me being in my 20's love it.
