Great for a Toddler July 24, 2008 Judy (Matawan NJ) 7 out of 10 found this review helpful
I bought this as a gift for my 3-yr-old granddaughter because the description said it was appropriate for the 24 months to 5 years age group. I don't know who decided that, but as soon as I saw it, I knew my granddaughter was too old for this toy. From all appearances, it is a toddler toy. I gave it to a little girl turning two because I knew she loves music, and it was ideal for her. She had a lot of fun playing with it.
if kids like music August 21, 2008 R Shaw they will like this. I bought it for my two and three year old daycare kids. you have to press a button and then shake it. if you stop shaking the music stops. we have the piano and guitar like it and they play if you keep using them. saves batteries that way. I doubt they will play with it much when they are past 3 3/4 but it is fun for them now. they all grab one and play like they are in a band. if kids have a short attention span I doubt this would be good for them.
Too much coordination August 25, 2008 William M. Simpson, Jr. (Charleston SC) The tambourine is sort of fun, but takes too much coordination to get the whole song to play for a little person at the low end of the suggested age range for the product. He lost interest quickly. Will try it again in a few months and see if he enjoys it more then.
Made for future California governors September 3, 2008 Samuel Chell (Kenosha,, WI United States) 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
This toy has little to do with music and a lot to do with coordination and strength. The 2-year-old for whom it is presumably suited must: 1. catch on to depressing a button before shaking the toy; 2. have the muscular stength and aerobic endurance to shake the toy vigorously until the tune has come to its conclusion; 3. possess the motivation to attempt either of the aforementioned steps. I frankly was wasted after shaking it violently for the entirety of "Oh, Susanna," so I'm not sure what the remaining six tunes are (and in no shape to find out). From the opening bars I was able to recognize Scott Joplin's "The Entertainer," but the typically cheesy single-note sound provides little motivation for a huffin'-'n-puffin' grandpa to shake this ragtime staple to its conclusion. This thing might work with a precocious Arnold--just promise the kid some greater reward than the song itself. Or an adult in need of some exercise might find it convenient to use at their desk (just don't let your co-workers catch sight of you turning as red as the tambourine while trying to get it to play "Don't you cry for me"). Of course, there's always the possibility that an adult's working with the device will loosen it up enough for a tot to tempt a tune out of it. Or perhaps this "Magic Tambourine" will work for those who have the magic touch. It's not worth the fuss of returning, so we'll see how it goes over with my grandchild. If she makes it all the way through "The Entertainer," I'll raise my rating to a high 5 and encourage her to run for governor (big things can happen to women governors).
